The Instrument for All was designed and developed by Alfons van Leggelo, whose Dance Chimes have already become a classic. Due to the strict geometrical design, both objects can be integrated as sculptural elements into any architectural environment.
While the Dance Chimes were intended principally to reinforce one’s consciousness of movement, the Instrument for All is first and foremost a musical instrument — a musical instrument that is publicly accessible and can be easily played by everyone. The key mechanism of this instrument was designed to facilitate spontaneous play and to allow volume differentiation which is essential in musical development.
The Instrument for All is available in two versions: tuned either to a pentatonic or a diatonic scale.
The pentatonic version (based on a scale of five notes) has the advantage that those with less musical skill or even those playing randomly will almost always create a harmonious sound pattern. (For this reason the Dance Chimes are always offered with pentatonic tuning.) Although the number of known melodies that can be played on the pentatonic version is limited, this in itself challenges the creativity of the player and stimulates free improvisation.

The diatonic version (based on the seven notes of the major scale) is better suited to playing known melodies, but in this version random sound patterns are not always experienced as harmonious.
Selection and installation of the Instrument for All should be based on the location and the intended use.
In comparison to the Dance Chimes the volume of both versions is slightly muted.
Since the tone pitch and the tuning of the two devices is different, the Instrument for All should not be installed in the immediate vicinity of the Dance Chimes, unless a request has been made for them to be tuned to one another when placing an order.
